My red hat lady stuff has been found and it was exactly where I thought it was (at my sister's house - she moved and took her stuff out of storage and I told her I thought she might have taken it by mistake. She insisted she didn't, but I got a text today saying she found it). Of course in the meantime I went and replaced just about everything, so now I have a ton of extra stuff.
Everything was replaceable, but I was really upset when I realized that my red hat lady mardi gras beads that Kim bought me for my birthday were missing with the rest of the stuff. So glad it's been found (even though it was where I said it was like a month ago!).
In other news: I am so excited for this trip! I have a job interview on Wednesday, then on Thursday morning I take off for the big trip!

Theme Night Spotlight: Red Hat Ladies
Where to start...like Loverboy said, you better start from the start. Here's the official story from the official website of the Red Hat Society. Have fun!!!
Long story short, old ladies get together and to celebrate how fun and sassy they still are (after 50!) they wear bright purple dresses with bright red hats, all of which is accented by ridiculous red accessories. There are queen mothers and all kinds of other weird things about this group. I happened upon a Red Hat Society store when I was going to grad school in Fullerton and found out later that the lady responsible for all of this lives in Fullerton.
When my mom turned 50, her friend bought her a Red Hat Society book and told her to join. My mom was humiliated, even more so when my sister and I bought a Red Hat Society antenna ball and put it on her car. Just in case it isn't obvious, my mom wants nothing to do with the Red Hat Society, at least not until she's an actual old lady.
Binh, who has forsaken us once again in her quest to make the world better, did some research and found that women under 50 can join as honorary members, but they have to wear lavender and pink and are called pink hatters. Binh dressed up as a pink hatter the first time we did this theme, and because no one really knows about the pink hatters, people thought we had kidnapped a young Vietnamese child. True story.
The key to being an awesome red hat lady is to look sassy. And old.
So you can see why this night is such a hit. We did this first in 2008 and brought it back for STBEX and decided then that it would be a staple theme night because people love it so much.
See the scarf on the lady right in front? I have that.
These people really are just begging for people like us to dress up like them in Vegas.
This is not my mom.

Now can we put to rest those rumors that Binh doesn't exist?

I love Mike's old lady face.

Pictures coming soon...
This year, we tested out Jessie's idea of handing out business cards to people who take pictures of us. So far, we have quite a few "fan" photos from Red Hat Lady night, but I haven't gotten any from Oates Night or Sweatband Overload. As soon as I get all STBE 2011 pictures, I'll post some sort of slideshow here and on the STBE website.
I'm already looking forward to STBE 2012 - The Plaza just fancied itself up, so we may have to go test it out!

Day One: Red Hat Ladies
Mike and I arrived separately at the airport before noon. Ashley and Jose were picking us up and still outside of town, so we sidled up at the bar at Jose Cuervo's Tequileria and had a few drinks. I had already had two beers on the plane because they said my coupons would no longer be honored after September 1. I had no choice!
Ashley and Jose arrived about a half an hour later and we made a beer run to get trashcan lemonade ingredients (Select 55 and frozen pink lemonade concentrate). We checked into the hotel at around 12:30 and began mixing the trashcan cocktail in our hotel room's trashcan (hence the name, duh).
After drinking for a while, we took off to become Dollar Menunaires and soon began getting texts from arriving revelers. Kat arrived first, then Kim, followed by Ryan and Stephen. Jessie had some flight issues, but made it in at around 6.
We gambled for a bit, then convened at 9 to change into our red hat finest. All I can say is it was out of control! Jessie was smart enough to have business cards made so we could get some of the pictures we were posing for back.
Some of my tweets didn't make it to facebook, so here's a link to my twitter feed to catch up.
This is a really bad recap of what happened, so hopefully my tweets from last night will help fill in some of the blanks.

tomorrow's the big day!!!
Stephen and Ryan are in Vegas keeping it warm for us. The big crew arrives tomorrow! I limited the guest list a bit this year. While the large group (I think we had 15 last year, 18 at one point) was a lot of fun, the smaller group (10) might be a little more manageable.
The bag's all loaded up with ridiculous outfits and ready to go!

theme night shopping tips
We're getting closer to STBE 2011, so hopefully you've all had time to shop around for your theme night outfits. Kim and I went out today and got some sweet outfits. I got a new Red Hat Lady outfit, a totally rad Oates getup, and lots and lots of sweatbands for Sweatband Overload night.
The previous post is a good reference point if you're not familiar with what Oates wears. Red Hat Ladies can get away with just about anything as long as it involves purple as the main color and red accents. Sweatband Overload is just that: lots of sweatbands. Mike and I also think knee high striped tube socks are a must to complete that look.
We were able to find parts for all of our outfits at thrift stores, KMart, and Joanne Fabrics. We also hit up Party City, but the mustaches hadn't been put out yet (they moved everything to set up for Halloween). EBAY is also a good option if you don't have time to go out.
Happy shopping!!!

Saturday!
I'll start with what I wrote fairly early on Sunday about Saturday's adventures, then I'll do a separate post for Sunday's shenanigans...Here we go!
Saturday was awesome. I went to the pool earlier with Kim and Claire and used the awesome waterslide that goes through a shark tank. We’re pretty sure there was a dead shark in the bottom of the tank. Anyhoo, while there, these two girls who are the spawn of the devil followed me around the pool splashing me. We moved to the other side of the pool and they followed! Finally, I yelled, “I will hit a child!” and splashed a large amount of water in their faces and left the pool.
Later on, we got ready for Mike’s fancy steak dinner at the Binion’s steakhouse. It was really nice up there, but the service was hella slow. It was super quiet in there, too, making our conversations especially inappropriate and out of place.
After dinner, we put on our red hat lady best and hit the town. We were famous! We posed for so many pictures, we decided that next year, we’re bringing business cards directing people to send pictures they take with us to a soon-to-be-created stbe.org email address. I’ll post some pictures of our awesomeness so you can see what I’m talking about. We didn’t get invited up into any nightclubs, but we were clearly the main attraction on Fremont Street last night.
Kim says I need to mention that we were a walking dance party. Everywhere we went, we would end up dancing for a huge crowd of appreciative revelers. Seriously, in Vegas, you walk ten feet and a new song is playing, so it was a constant red hat lady dance party. I'll add some pictures to these posts later, because I have almost three hours until my plane takes off. I don't have too many action shots on my camera because Mike's mom was acting as our official photographer this weekend.
Oh, I don't know how I forgot to mention the end of the night. When we got tired of being accosted by tourists for pictures, we ducked into different casinos and gambled for a bit. At one point, some of our group took over entire blackjack tables. Jose would just be walking around in his outfit and hit up a roulette table to make some bets like nothing strange was going on. At about 3:30, I called it a night and let the other red hat ladies finish gambling. I wanted to be rested up for my birthday because I planned on being hella deucefaced (and was I ever!).
Anyhoo, when I got back to my room, Gabe was in there along with Jessie and Mario. They were locked out of their room because Otto and Daisy locked the deadbolt. They called the front desk who informed them that security locked the door because it had been left unattended with the door wide open. They sent security up again, and the deadbolt was unlocked. Unfortunately, they had also put the chain on the door, so maintenance had to come and snap the chain. When the door was finally opened, we walked in and saw Otto passed the deuce out. Jessie and Mario had been screaming and yelling and calling his phone to no avail. He had gotten trashed earlier and went and called our favorite waitress at Mermaids "Kate Gosselin." Now, we call her that amongst ourselves because of her unfortunate haircut, we don't call her that to her face. When Otto ran up and yelled, "hey! It's Kate Gosselin, you guys! She's right here!" she did not look amused. We pretended we had no idea what he was talking about and excused ourselves from the establishment.
Anyhoo, back to the Otto story. When Jessie and Mario got in, they tried again to wake him up, even slapping him. He woke up briefly and spit on himself. We have no idea where Daisy was, which was fine. "She was trouble," to quote Ryan. I guess he ended up sleeping and peeing in the bathtub at some point that night. We're still deciding on his punishment. I think that's it. Kim will read these and edit as necessary.
